Italy’s spirits sector is entering a new era of international relevance.

According to data compiled by Nomisma, Italian spirits exports reached €1.75 billion in 2024, positioning the country as the fifth-largest exporter globally—behind the United Kingdom, France, Mexico, and the United States.

This milestone reflects a robust growth trajectory. Between 2019 and 2024, exports expanded by 41%, marking one of the fastest growth rates among the world’s leading spirits exporters. The surge highlights Italy’s increasing competitiveness in a segment traditionally dominated by whisky, cognac, and tequila-producing nations.

A key driver behind this performance is Italy’s strength in the liqueur category. Italian producers, alongside those in Germany, dominate this segment globally. In 2024 alone, Italian liqueur exports reached €547 million, growing by 25% over five years—outpacing Germany’s 19% growth. Products such as amari, aperitivi, and herbal liqueurs continue to resonate with international consumers, particularly amid the global cocktail renaissance.

Geographically, export flows remain concentrated in key developed markets. Germany leads as the primary destination, accounting for 21% of total exports. The United States follows with 12%, while the United Kingdom represents 8%. Meanwhile, emerging markets are becoming increasingly significant. Poland, in particular, recorded a striking 70% increase in imports of Italian spirits over the same period, signaling strong expansion potential in Central and Eastern Europe.

However, recent data indicates a potential slowdown. In the first ten months of 2025, exports declined by 5%, mirroring broader challenges seen across the beverage sector, including inflationary pressures, shifting consumption habits, and inventory adjustments in key markets.

Despite this temporary contraction, the long-term outlook remains positive. Italy’s ability to combine heritage, regional diversity, and innovation—especially in premium and artisanal spirits—positions it well for sustained growth. As global consumers increasingly seek authenticity and unique flavor profiles, Italian spirits are poised to consolidate their presence across both mature and emerging markets.
