The Government of the Republic of Moldova has officially approved the Strategic Development Vision for the Wine Sector 2026–2030, marking an important milestone for one of the country's most valuable agricultural industries.
The new roadmap is designed to modernize the sector, improve its resilience, and position Moldovan wines more competitively in premium international markets.
Wine remains one of Moldova's flagship industries, accounting for around 16% of the country's agricultural value. In 2024, wine exports generated approximately USD 234.7 million, while the industry supported around 150,000 jobs across viticulture, winemaking, logistics, and tourism.
A major focus of the strategy is the modernization and restructuring of vineyards to better align production with evolving consumer demand and international market trends. Investments will encourage growers to cultivate vineyards that deliver higher-quality grapes while improving sustainability and climate resilience.
The government also plans to strengthen the production of wines carrying Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), helping consumers identify authentic wines linked to Moldova's distinct wine regions. Greater emphasis will also be placed on indigenous grape varieties, allowing Moldovan producers to further differentiate themselves in increasingly competitive export markets.
With approximately 85% of Moldova's wine production exported, expanding into premium market segments is another strategic priority. Rather than focusing solely on export volumes, the vision aims to increase the value of exports by improving quality, strengthening branding, and diversifying international destinations.
Beyond exports, the strategy seeks to stimulate domestic wine consumption by promoting quality wines and responsible drinking habits. Sustainability, innovation, and digital transformation are also identified as essential pillars for the future competitiveness of Moldova's wine industry.
Wine tourism represents another important opportunity outlined in the plan. Authorities intend to further develop wine routes, wineries, and cultural experiences that showcase Moldova's rich winemaking heritage while enhancing the country's international reputation as an emerging wine destination.
Implementation of the strategy will be coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry together with the National Office of Vine and Wine and representatives from the private wine sector. Through close cooperation, the initiative aims to ensure long-term growth, increased export value, and stronger global recognition for Moldovan wines.
