Sustainable and Organic Wines Gain Momentum as Younger Consumers Reshape the Global Wine Market

The global wine industry is undergoing a significant transformation as sustainability, health consciousness, and ethical consumption increasingly influence purchasing decisions.

According to the latest IWSR Opportunities in Sustainable, Organic and Alternative Wine 2025 report, younger consumers are driving demand for organic, natural, biodynamic, orange, and sustainably produced wines, creating new opportunities for producers worldwide.

While traditional wine categories continue to dominate overall sales, alternative wines are steadily moving from niche segments into the mainstream, particularly among Millennials and Generation Z. However, challenges surrounding availability, pricing, and consumer awareness continue to limit the category's full potential.

Younger Generations Drive Demand for Alternative Wines

The strongest growth in sustainable and alternative wine categories is coming from younger wine drinkers. Across key markets including Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and China, Millennials and Gen Z consumers demonstrate a significantly stronger connection to sustainability compared with older generations.

Research shows that at least half of younger regular wine drinkers across these markets identify sustainability as an important purchasing consideration. More notably, over 64% report a strong connection to alternative wine styles such as organic, natural, and sustainably produced wines.

This trend reflects broader lifestyle shifts among younger consumers, who increasingly seek products that align with environmental responsibility, ethical production methods, and personal wellness goals.

Organic Wine Continues to Expand Globally

Among alternative wine categories, organic wine remains one of the strongest performers.

Over the past five years, organic wine volumes have increased across most major markets. Traditional European leaders such as France and Germany continue to account for the largest volumes, but growth rates have accelerated in newer markets.

Australia has emerged as a standout performer, recording a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% between 2019 and 2024. Canada and the United Kingdom have also delivered positive growth, demonstrating that consumer interest in certified organic products extends well beyond established wine-producing nations.

The appeal of organic wine is supported by growing consumer confidence in certification systems, increased retail visibility, and stronger associations with environmental stewardship.

Natural Wine Remains the Category to Watch

According to IWSR's Opportunity Index, natural wine currently represents the most attractive growth opportunity among alternative wine segments.

The category has benefited from strong consumer engagement in China, Australia, and the United Kingdom, where wine drinkers increasingly associate natural wines with authenticity, craftsmanship, and minimal intervention winemaking.

Natural wine's appeal is particularly strong among urban consumers who value artisanal products and seek distinctive drinking experiences. Social media, wine bars, and specialist retailers have also played an important role in expanding awareness of the category.

While natural wine remains relatively small compared with conventional wine, its cultural influence continues to grow within premium wine circles.

Sustainability Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage

Sustainably produced wines are gaining visibility across numerous international markets.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Denmark, and China are seeing growing consumer interest in wines produced with environmentally responsible practices.

For many consumers, sustainability is no longer a niche attribute but an important factor when evaluating brands. Producers that communicate clear sustainability credentials are increasingly able to differentiate themselves in crowded retail environments.

As climate change becomes a more visible challenge for agriculture and viticulture, sustainability messaging is expected to play an even greater role in wine marketing strategies.

The Long-Term Outlook Remains Positive

Although alternative wines still represent a relatively small share of global wine consumption, the category's future appears promising.

Health and wellness trends continue to support demand, while younger consumers are expanding their exploration of organic, natural, orange, biodynamic, and sustainably produced wines.

China, the United Kingdom, and the United States are currently viewed as the markets with the greatest long-term potential, supported by rising awareness, improving perceptions, and increasing consumer engagement.

For wineries willing to invest in sustainability certifications, transparent production practices, and consumer education, alternative wines may represent one of the most significant growth opportunities in the global wine industry over the coming decade.
