Few wineries have played such a defining role in the modern revival of Tokaj as Pajzos Tokaj.
Combining centuries of winemaking heritage with French expertise, international investment, and a commitment to innovation, the winery has become one of Hungary's leading ambassadors for the world's first officially classified wine region.
Today, Pajzos Tokaj is recognized for producing both exceptional sweet wines and elegant dry Furmint, exporting its wines across the globe while remaining deeply connected to the unique terroir that has made Tokaj famous for centuries.
The Beginning of a New Era
The modern story of Pajzos Tokaj began shortly after the political changes in Central and Eastern Europe. In 1991, renowned Bordeaux winemaker Jean-Michel Arcaute became the driving force behind an ambitious investment in Hungary's historic Tokaj wine region.
Arcaute, often described as one of the wine world's most visionary figures, managed Château Clinet in Pomerol after the French insurance company GAN acquired the estate. Recognizing Tokaj's extraordinary potential, he encouraged both GAN and the French investment group CFGVT (Compagnie Financière des Grands Vins de Tokaj) to invest in the region.
Their confidence marked one of the earliest major international investments in Hungary's wine industry following privatization.
Two Historic Vineyards, Two Distinct Brands
In 1992, GAN successfully acquired the historic 110-hectare Megyer Vineyard in Sárospatak through the government's privatization process. The company established Megyer Zrt. and introduced the Megyer Tokaj brand.
At nearly the same time, CFGVT, led by Jean-Louis Laborde, acquired the prestigious 107-hectare Pajzos Vineyard. The newly established Pajzos Zrt. officially launched the Pajzos Tokaj brand, laying the foundation for what would become one of the region's most respected wineries.
Although the two companies operated independently, they shared the same commercial management through French wine merchant GAM Audy.
Each vineyard served a different market position:
- Pajzos focused on premium wines showcasing exceptional vineyard quality.
- Megyer produced wines offering excellent value while maintaining high standards.
This dual-brand strategy proved highly successful both within Hungary and internationally.
International Expansion
Pajzos and Megyer quickly established themselves throughout the Hungarian market, supplying restaurants, hotels, and major retail chains including Cora, Tesco, and Metro.
Internationally, GAM Audy's extensive distribution network introduced Tokaj wines to consumers worldwide, creating export opportunities that continue to grow today.
The winery's export success demonstrated that Tokaj's unique wines could compete alongside many of Europe's most prestigious wine regions.
Jean-Louis Laborde's Vision
The company's next major transformation came under Jean-Louis Laborde.
Beginning in 1998, Laborde gradually consolidated ownership by acquiring Château Clinet, purchasing Megyer from GAN, and eventually buying out the remaining investors in CFGVT. By the early 2000s, Pajzos and Megyer had merged into a single company operating under Pajzos Zrt.
Laborde invested heavily in the future of the vineyards.
Between 2000 and 2004, low-yielding vines were replanted, vineyard management was modernized, and grape-growing practices were optimized. These improvements dramatically enhanced grape quality and established the foundation for the winery's modern portfolio.
The Rise of Dry Furmint
While Tokaj is internationally celebrated for its sweet Aszú wines, Pajzos Tokaj recognized the growing demand for high-quality dry wines.
In 2007, the winery developed the concept for T-Furmint, a fresh, reductive-style dry Furmint designed to express the purity of the Tokaj terroir.
The first vintage was released in 2008.
Consumer response exceeded expectations, and annual production has continued to increase as dry Furmint has become one of Hungary's flagship white wines.
Today, T-Furmint represents approximately one-third of the winery's annual production.
Continuous Innovation
Pajzos Tokaj has consistently combined respect for tradition with modern winemaking.
A major organizational renewal took place in 2015, when vineyard operations and winery management were entrusted to experienced professionals Pál Espák and Ferenc Naár.
Since November 2022, Árpád Kolozsváry-Kiss has led the winery, continuing its focus on quality, sustainability, and international growth.
International Recognition
The winery's commitment to excellence has earned numerous awards at prestigious international competitions, including:
- Decanter World Wine Awards
- Berliner Wine Trophy
- Asian Wine Trophy
- VinAgora
- Országos Borverseny
Among its greatest achievements is becoming the first Hungarian winery to receive 100-point scores from Wine Advocate for two different vintages of Tokaji Esszencia (1993 and 1999), awarded by Robert Parker's publication through critics Robert Parker and Neil Martin.
These perfect scores firmly established Pajzos Tokaj among the world's elite wine producers.
A Global Ambassador for Tokaj
Today, Pajzos Tokaj produces approximately 300,000 bottles annually while selling a similar volume each year.
Around 70% of production is exported, with key markets including:
- United Kingdom
- United States
- Canada
- Republic of Ireland
- Sweden
Part of these exports is distributed through Château Clinet in France, while the remainder is shipped directly from Hungary.
This international presence has made Pajzos one of Tokaj's strongest ambassadors on the global wine stage.
Tradition Meets Modern Style
The philosophy of Pajzos Tokaj is simple yet ambitious: to become a leading representative of authentic Tokaj wines while adapting to evolving consumer expectations.
Every bottle seeks to express the unique volcanic soils, noble grape varieties, and centuries-old heritage of Tokaj, while embracing modern winemaking techniques that enhance freshness, precision, and elegance.
Innovation, sustainability, and responsiveness to changing market trends remain central to the winery's identity.
Its guiding principle captures this perfectly:
"Proud ambassador of Tokaj terroir."
By preserving tradition while continually evolving, Pajzos Tokaj has become one of Hungary's benchmark wineries—bringing the extraordinary character of Tokaj to wine lovers around the world.
