Why Crama Mircești Is One of Moldova's Most Exciting Wineries

crama mircesti

Nestled in the heart of Moldova's renowned Codru PGI wine region, Crama Mircești has quickly established itself as one of the country's most exciting boutique wineries.

Located in the picturesque village of Mircești, approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Chișinău, the winery is surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and breathtaking landscapes that have earned it the affectionate nickname "The Little Tuscany of Moldova."

Although the winery itself is relatively young, its roots are deeply connected to a region where viticulture has flourished for centuries. Combining modern winemaking techniques with local traditions and a strong commitment to terroir, Crama Mircești represents a new generation of Moldovan wineries dedicated to producing authentic, high-quality wines.

A Historic Estate Reborn

The story of Crama Mircești begins long before the winery was founded. More than a century ago, a noble Moldovan family built a manor house on one of the area's highest hills, rising over 300 meters above sea level. The estate enjoyed a prosperous existence until the outbreak of World War II, when the family emigrated to Europe, leaving the property behind.

During the Soviet era, the manor served various purposes, including a kindergarten and facilities associated with the local collective farm, known as a kolkhoz. Decades of neglect gradually reduced the once-elegant estate to ruins.

Everything changed when entrepreneur Arcadie Fosnea acquired the property. Driven by a vision to restore the estate's former glory, he embarked on an ambitious project to rebuild the manor, revive the surrounding land, and create a winery that would celebrate both the region's heritage and its exceptional terroir.

The result is a remarkable wine estate where history, architecture, hospitality, and viticulture come together. Alongside the winery, the team developed vineyards, a guesthouse, and a traditional restaurant, creating a destination that offers visitors an authentic taste of Moldovan wine culture.

A Terroir Designed for Excellence

One of Crama Mircești's greatest assets is its unique location. Situated at elevations ranging from 270 to 320 meters above sea level, the vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure, cooling air currents, and significant day-night temperature variations. These conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving freshness while developing complexity and concentration.

The Codru PGI region is known for its moderate climate, fertile soils, and long winemaking tradition. Crama Mircești has embraced these natural advantages, carefully selecting grape varieties that thrive in the local environment while maintaining a sustainable approach to vineyard management.

Since establishing the modern vineyard in 2011, the winery has focused on producing wines that express the character of the land and reflect Moldova's rich wine heritage.

Vineyards and Grape Varieties

Today, Crama Mircești cultivates approximately 17 hectares of vineyards, featuring an impressive combination of indigenous and international grape varieties.

Among the local varieties are:

These grapes represent the heart of Moldova's wine identity and allow the winery to create wines with distinctive regional character.

The international portfolio includes:

This diverse selection provides winemakers with the flexibility to craft elegant whites, expressive rosés, structured reds, and unique blends that showcase both local traditions and global influences.

A New Generation of Moldovan Wine

Crama Mircești stands as a symbol of Moldova's modern wine renaissance. While honoring the history of the estate and the traditions of the Codru region, the winery embraces innovation and quality-driven production.

Visitors are welcomed into a setting where beautifully restored architecture meets contemporary winemaking, surrounded by panoramic vineyard views that rival some of Europe's most famous wine landscapes. It is this combination of authenticity, hospitality, and dedication to excellence that has helped earn Crama Mircești its reputation as the "Little Tuscany of Moldova."

For wine lovers seeking to discover the emerging treasures of Eastern European wine, Crama Mircești offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of Moldovan viticulture—one glass at a time.
